Going to the hospital for any reason can cause feelings of anxiety or worry, but going to the hospital for major surgery can be extra nervewracking. We have many of clients at The ScoliClinic who undergo Spinal Fusion Surgery, and to help you prepare for this we’ve put together our top items to bring for your hospital stay. A while ago, we interviewed Seika, one of our past team members at The ScoliClinic because she went through spinal fusion surgery a few years ago. She shares her top packing tips when preparing for a hospital trip.
Pillows
“Hospital pillows can be very uncomfortable so it’s best to bring your own. Pillows are also essential for the car ride home! Have one big pillow to help support your back, and another smaller pillow to adjust any uncomfortable positions. If you get cold you can also bring a blanket.”
Toothbrush and Toothpaste
“Don’t forget to bring these! You’ll need to stay in the hospital for a few days, and a toothbrush and toothpaste aren’t provided for you at the hospital.”
Face Moisturizer
“It’s good to bring face moisturizer since it’s quite dry in the hospital due to lots of ventilation.”
Hair Comb and Brush
“You’ll be lying down lots during your stay and hair can get stuck in wires and tapes so it’s handy to have a hairbrush on hand. If you have long hair, you could also style your hair in a way that keeps flyaway hair away from the spine (ex. french braids).”
Slip-On Shoes with a good grip
“Slip-On Shoes are super helpful so you don’t have to bend over to tie laces or thick straps for post-op physio or the walk to the car to go home.”
Grippy Socks
“Grippy socks are a great idea – they keep your toes warm and also provide you with some support so you won’t slip.”
Loose Clothing
“Before the ride home, you might want to change into really comfy clothing. A big, baggy shirt with a wide neck and loose-fitting pants is a must. It’s also helpful to bring extra underwear and socks!”
Entertainment
“You’ll be in the hospital after your operation for a few days, so you definitely want to bring entertainment. I brought my iPhone, iPad, and knitting. Make sure you also remember to bring a charger for any electrical devices you are bringing! You should bring anything that helps you feel more comfortable or relaxed.”
