Scoliosis-Friendly Mat Pilates

Interested in trying Pilates, but unsure of how it will affect your spine? The ScoliClinic is now offering scoliosis-friendly mat pilates classes! Please note, during COVID times, we’ve shifted our in-person classes to running virtually only.

Created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, Pilates offers plenty of benefits to your body, regardless of your fitness background.

At The ScoliClinic, the Pilates exercises, cues, and props are thoughtfully selected to follow scoliosis-specific physiotherapy principles based on the biomechanics of scoliosis.

The classes will provide a medium for building upon what you have learned through your Physio program, incorporating small Pilates equipment such as toning and stability balls, foam rollers, fitness circles, and therabands. You’ll improve your overall strength, posture, flexibility and get one heck of a core workout.

  • Single Virtual Class – $7.50 + GST
  • Virtual 4-Class Pack – $20.00 + GST

Virtually (currently pausing in-person classes during COVID times):
Thursdays: 7pm – 8pm Pacific Standard Time

Pilates classes are not eligible for reimbursement through extended benefits.

Scoliosis-Friendly Yoga

We’ve collaborated with talented yoga instructors offer scoliosis-friendly yoga classes in our Vancouver AND North Vancouver locations!

These classes incorporate scoliosis principles and language based on the Schroth Method into traditional yoga poses, and are heavily focused on teaching participants how to modify movements so they can participate in community yoga classes.

*We are actively working on refining some details, and are hoping to get this rolling again in the 2021. Follow us on Instagram to catch announcements, or check back here in the fall. Thanks for your patience as we figure out the best structure to suit everyone’s needs, especially during COVID times!*

Before your appointment

If you have X-Ray images, be sure to let us know as this will help your Physiotherapist design your treatment plan.

If you or your child already have a brace, physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE) are recommended to maintain postural muscle strength, and to retain as much correction as possible when brace wear ends.

A referral to a spine surgeon and/or bracing can be discussed at the initial assessment.

Please bring:

  • X-ray images either digitally or on disc if available
(we can request them directly from the imaging facility; more info upon booking your initial appointment)
  • Any relevant reports
  • Sports bra / tank top, shorts or leggings

Please note: Payments can be made by VISA, MasterCard, cash, or cheque. We cannot accept AMEX or debit at this time.
